Decanter Cabernet

The Riedel Restaurant Cabernet Decanter (1440/13) is the classic restaurant decanting vessel: a wide-shouldered, simple design in continuous production since 2004, with proportions proven to aerate full-bodied red wine effectively while remaining practical to handle, pour from, and clean. At 1050ml total capacity with a 124mm widest diameter, a standard 750ml bottle fills the decanter to approximately its widest point, providing maximum surface area for the aeration that Cabernet Sauvignon and similarly structured reds need to open up.

The design is intentionally unfussy. Simple classic lines mean no difficult angles to clean, a natural pour from the wide neck, and an elegant presence at the table that does not compete with the wine for attention. Machine-made in lead-free crystal, sold individually for professional restaurant service.

Key features:

  • Classic wide-bowl aeration: The 124mm diameter at the widest point provides generous wine-to-air surface area for effective aeration of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and other full-bodied tannic reds
  • 750ml fills to the widest point: A standard bottle fills the decanter to approximately maximum diameter, placing the wine where surface area is greatest
  • Simple, easy-to-clean design: Unfussy classic lines mean no difficult angles or recesses; wide neck cleans easily by hand or in the dishwasher
  • In continuous production since 2004: Proven design with an established track record across two decades of professional restaurant service
  • Machine-made lead-free crystal: Consistent form and clarity
  • Sold individually, trade-only: Flexible purchasing for professional operations

What Restaurant Professionals Ask About This Product

How much wine does this decanter actually hold?

The total capacity is 1050ml, but it is designed for one standard 750ml bottle. A 750ml pour brings the wine to approximately the widest point of the bowl, which is the correct fill level for maximum aeration. The additional 300ml is functional headspace for breathing and swirling. Do not fill to the 1050ml maximum.

Is this decanter suitable for older wines as well as young Cabernet?

The Cabernet Decanter is best suited to younger, robust wines where vigorous aeration is the objective. The wide 124mm bowl aerates wine quickly, ideal for tannic young Cabernet or Shiraz but potentially over-aerating a fragile older Burgundy. For older vintages requiring gentle controlled decanting, the slimmer Mosel Decanter (1416/03) is more appropriate.

How do you clean a wide-neck decanter effectively?

The wide neck accommodates a standard long-handled brush for thorough interior cleaning. For dishwasher cleaning, position at an angle so water can enter and drain freely. For wine staining, use decanter cleaning beads with warm water before washing.

Does this decanter come with a stopper?

The Cabernet Decanter does not come with a stopper. Stoppers are not required for standard restaurant decanting service. A decanted wine should be consumed within a few hours; if storage is needed, a neutral wine stopper or loosely placed cling film over the neck prevents contamination.

Why the Classic Decanter Shape Has Lasted 20 Years

The Cabernet Decanter has been in continuous production since 2004 because it gets the fundamentals right without overcomplicating them. The wide bowl aerates effectively. The classic lines look correct on any table, from a casual bistro to a fine dining room. The simple design cleans without frustration. And the 750ml-to-widest-point fill level is intuitive for any service team.

For restaurant operations, the most useful decanter is often the simplest one. A decanter the team uses consistently, that pours cleanly, and that guests recognise as considered service is worth more than a dramatically shaped vessel that sits on the shelf because staff are unsure when to deploy it.

The Cabernet Decanter is the dependable professional option for the table wine programme. For operations wanting a statement piece for prestige bottles, it sits alongside the Magnum and Merlot shapes to cover the full range of decanting occasions.

Care & Use Instructions

Hand Washing: The wide neck accommodates a standard decanter brush. Rinse with warm water immediately after service. For staining, use decanter cleaning beads or a small amount of white vinegar with warm water, swirl, and rinse thoroughly.

Dishwasher: Position at an angle so water can enter the neck and drain freely. The wide base requires adequate rack clearance.

Decanting Technique: Pour slowly over a light source to see when sediment approaches the neck. Stop when sediment begins to move toward the neck, typically leaving 20-30ml in the bottle.

Breakage Planning: Decanters in regular commercial service typically see 10-15% annual breakage. The Cabernet Decanter's wide stable base reduces tip-over risk.

Due to ongoing issues, we have had to suspend deliveries to mainland Europe and the Republic of Ireland. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed - including the USA, Australia, and other destinations - this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222682 with the details of your order and we will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours, then ask whether you would like to proceed.

Please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.

Returns & Refunds

We hope your order arrives in perfect condition and that you love what you've chosen. If something isn't right - whether the item is unwanted, damaged, or develops a fault - we'll do our best to make the process as straightforward as possible.

You can reach us via our contact form or by calling 01737 222682. You'll be speaking to a member of our team based in our Surrey warehouse.

I want to return an unwanted item

Unwanted items can be returned for a no-quibble refund, provided they are in resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Our returns policy normally covers the 365 days following purchase - but if you're outside that window, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

Packing your return:

  • Wrap or box items appropriately to prevent damage in transit.
  • Do not stick labels or tape directly to the product's branded packaging - a damaged box means we can no longer accept the return.
  • The easiest method is to reuse the outer packing material and box we originally sent your order in.

If the product is not in fully resaleable condition, or the branded box is damaged, we will apply our half-price replacement guarantee and refund you half the original purchase price.

Return postage: Customers are responsible for the cost of returning items. We recommend using a recorded or signed-for service so the parcel is insured and trackable.

Items remain your responsibility until they arrive with us.

Alternatively, you can purchase a Royal Mail returns label here, from our parent company, Art of Living Cookshop.
