Riedel Superleggero Champagne Wine Glass

"Superleggero" is Italian for "super light," and this glass earns the name: an egg-shaped bowl in deliberately thin crystal, developed by Riedel to do more for Champagne than the traditional flute manages. It's the machine-made version of the original handmade Superleggero, produced on technology Riedel built in-house specifically to reproduce that same thin-walled quality without the variation that comes with hand-blowing.

The case against the flute is straightforward: its narrow bowl looks elegant but restricts the wine's surface area, which keeps aroma locked in rather than letting it develop. The Superleggero Champagne glass's wider rim gives Champagne, Cuvée Prestige and other sparkling wines room to release fruit, mineral and toasty notes that a flute tends to keep hidden. A sparkling point etched into the base of the bowl then produces a fine, even stream of bubbles rising through the glass, so you get the visual theatre of a flute alongside the aromatic range a flute can't deliver.

Key features of the Riedel Superleggero Champagne Wine Glass:

  • Egg-shaped bowl: A wider rim than a traditional flute, releasing fruit, mineral and toasty notes that stay locked in a narrower glass
  • Sparkling point: A dedicated nucleation point at the base of the bowl produces a fine, even stream of bubbles
  • Deliberately thin crystal: True to the Superleggero name, with a lightness in the hand that belies its durability
  • Machine-made to a handmade standard: Produced on technology developed in-house to reproduce the quality of the original hand-blown Superleggero consistently
  • Generous capacity: 464ml capacity and 260mm height, with a base up to 106mm in diameter for stability
  • Dishwasher safe: Practical for regular use without hand-washing requirements
  • Flexible buying options: Available as a single glass, a pair, or in 4 and 8 packs

This glass suits anyone serving Champagne or quality sparkling wine who wants more from it than a flute gives back. If you've ever found a vintage Cuvée Prestige tastes strangely flat or one-dimensional in a standard flute, this is the shape built to answer that.

⚠️ Please Handle With Care ⚠️: However gentle you think you are being, be a little more gentle still. True to its name, this is an especially thin, light glass, and it's genuinely dishwasher-safe, but it's still fine crystal, not kitchen glassware. A knock against a tap, the dishwasher basket or another glass is usually all it takes. Hold by the bowl when drying, give each glass room when loading the dishwasher, and avoid knocking glasses together when washing or storing. Small habits like these are what make a set last for years rather than months.

What Customers Ask About the Superleggero Champagne Glass

Why would I use this instead of a Champagne flute?

A flute's narrow bowl looks the part, but it restricts the surface area the wine has to release aroma, which leaves a lot of what you've paid for undetected. The Superleggero's wider, egg-shaped bowl gives Champagne room to open up, revealing fruit, mineral and toasty notes a flute tends to keep locked in, whilst the sparkling point still delivers the fine bubble stream that makes a flute look good in the first place.

What is the "sparkling point" and does it actually make a difference?

It's a small, deliberately roughened point etched into the base of the bowl, which gives dissolved carbon dioxide somewhere consistent to nucleate from. That produces a steady, fine stream of bubbles rising through the glass rather than a random, uneven fizz. It's a genuine functional detail rather than decoration, and it's what lets this wider bowl keep the visual appeal people associate with a flute.

Is machine-made Superleggero as good as the original handmade version?

Riedel developed this production technology specifically to reproduce the thin-walled quality of the original hand-blown Superleggero without the piece-to-piece variation that comes with mouth-blowing. The trade-off runs the other way to most machine-versus-handmade comparisons: you get more consistency across every glass, at a lower cost, rather than the individual character of a hand-blown piece.

Is this glass too delicate for regular use?

It's thinner and lighter than most stemware, which is the entire point of the Superleggero name, but it's also genuinely dishwasher safe, so it's built for regular use rather than display only. The usual crystal care still applies: hold it by the bowl or base rather than knocking it against taps or other glassware, and give it room in the dishwasher.

Which buying option should I choose?

A single glass suits anyone who wants to treat themselves to one properly good Champagne glass without committing further. The pair is a sensible way to try the shape with someone else in mind too. The 4 pack is the most popular choice for general entertaining, and the 8 pack suits larger gatherings or anyone building a full set.

Understanding Superleggero

Superleggero was originally Riedel's hand-blown, ultra-thin premium line, the kind of glass where wall thickness is shaved down as far as the material allows without sacrificing structural integrity. That's genuinely difficult to do consistently by hand, which is where this glass's story gets interesting: Riedel built dedicated machine technology in-house specifically to reproduce that same thin-walled result, piece after piece, without the variation that comes with mouth-blowing.

The result sits in an unusual position. It isn't the hand-blown original, but it isn't a standard machine-made glass either, it's a deliberate attempt to get the performance of the handmade version at a more accessible price and with more consistency across a set. Whether that trade-off suits you depends on what you value: if you want the individual character of hand-blown glass, look at Riedel's Fatto a Mano range instead; if you want the thin-walled performance with dishwasher-safe practicality, this is built for exactly that.

Why Shape Matters More Than Tradition for Champagne

The flute became the default Champagne glass largely for its visual effect, a tall column of bubbles rising steadily, rather than because it's the best shape for actually tasting the wine. A narrow bowl restricts the surface area exposed to air, which limits how much aroma can develop and escape towards your nose. For a simple, young, straightforward sparkling wine that might not matter much, but for a vintage Champagne or Cuvée Prestige with real complexity, a flute can flatten exactly the character you're paying for.

The Superleggero Champagne glass's egg-shaped bowl addresses this directly. The wider rim gives the wine more room to release fruit, toasty autolysis notes, and minerality as it's poured and as it sits, whilst the sparkling point ensures you don't lose the visual appeal of a steady bubble stream in the process. It's a shape built on the same varietal-specific thinking Riedel applies to still wine, just redirected at sparkling wine's particular challenge: keeping the fizz whilst still letting the aroma out.

Care & Use Instructions

Dishwasher Care: The Superleggero Champagne glass is dishwasher safe despite its especially thin construction. Use a gentle cycle at maximum 55°C and space glasses so they don't touch each other or other items. Secure the glass in the upper rack where it won't knock against other items or the spray arm. Avoid heavily abrasive or lemon-scented detergents which can cloud crystal over time. Remove promptly and allow to air dry with the door open to prevent water spots.

Handwashing: Use warm (not hot) water with mild detergent. Hold the glass by the bowl or base rather than gripping it by the rim. Support the bowl from underneath with one hand whilst washing the interior with a soft cloth or sponge in the other, taking extra care given how thin the walls are. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a lint-free cloth.

Polishing: Use a microfibre or linen cloth. Hold the bowl firmly but gently and polish it in circular motions. For stubborn water spots, add a small amount of white vinegar to rinse water.

Storage: Store glasses upright, never stacked or rim-down. The 260mm height requires adequate vertical cupboard space. Ensure glasses are completely dry before storing to prevent cloudiness or odours developing.

Serving: Champagne and sparkling wine show best chilled to around 8-10°C. Pour at a slight angle down the side of the bowl rather than straight down the centre, which reduces excess foaming and preserves more of the fine bubble stream the sparkling point is designed to produce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses typically takes 3-5 working days and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. We pack all glassware carefully with protective packaging to ensure safe arrival, with particular care taken for especially thin pieces like Superleggero.

Can I return the glasses if I don't like them after using them?

We offer a no quibble return guarantee that allows you to return goods even after use. The items must be in a resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Please wrap or box items appropriately for transit to avoid damage, particularly important for thin crystal glassware.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

If you accidentally break a glass within 2 years of purchase, we'll replace it at half the current retail price. You'll need proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement, or order confirmation if purchased online) and evidence of the breakage (a photo is fine). We log your purchase at point of sale, or online orders are automatically recorded in our system.

What's the difference between the buying options?

All options are the identical glass; only the quantity changes. The single glass (SKU 102292) suits buying one for yourself. The pair (SKU SP102292) is a good way to try the shape with someone else in mind. The 4 pack is the most popular option for general entertaining, and the 8 pack suits larger-scale use.

Do you offer gift packaging?

Riedel Superleggero glasses come in packaging suitable for gifting and provide appropriate protection for the thin crystal. These make a considered gift for anyone who takes Champagne or sparkling wine seriously.

Can I buy additional glasses to match my set?

Yes. The Superleggero Champagne glass is part of Riedel's ongoing range, and machine production ensures new glasses will match your existing set in size and quality, whichever buying option you started with.

Will this glass make my Champagne go flat faster than a flute?

Not meaningfully. The sparkling point at the base is specifically there to maintain a steady, fine stream of bubbles despite the wider bowl, so you're not trading away fizz to get the aromatic benefit. Any sparkling wine loses carbonation gradually over time regardless of glass shape; this shape is built to slow that perception rather than accelerate it.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed - including the USA, Australia, and other destinations - this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222682 with the details of your order and we will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours, then ask whether you would like to proceed.

Please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.

Returns & Refunds

We hope your order arrives in perfect condition and that you love what you've chosen. If something isn't right - whether the item is unwanted, damaged, or develops a fault - we'll do our best to make the process as straightforward as possible.

You can reach us via our contact form or by calling 01737 222682. You'll be speaking to a member of our team based in our Surrey warehouse.

I want to return an unwanted item

Unwanted items can be returned for a no-quibble refund, provided they are in resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Our returns policy normally covers the 365 days following purchase - but if you're outside that window, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

Packing your return:

  • Wrap or box items appropriately to prevent damage in transit.
  • Do not stick labels or tape directly to the product's branded packaging - a damaged box means we can no longer accept the return.
  • The easiest method is to reuse the outer packing material and box we originally sent your order in.

If the product is not in fully resaleable condition, or the branded box is damaged, we will apply our half-price replacement guarantee and refund you half the original purchase price.

Return postage: Customers are responsible for the cost of returning items. We recommend using a recorded or signed-for service so the parcel is insured and trackable.

Items remain your responsibility until they arrive with us.

Alternatively, you can purchase a Royal Mail returns label here, from our parent company, Art of Living Cookshop.
