Riedel Restaurant Veritas Oaked Chardonnay White Wine Glass

The Riedel Restaurant Veritas Oaked Chardonnay glass (0449/97) is a varietal-specific design built around the particular demands of full-bodied, barrel-influenced white wines. Where a small or narrow glass constrains and concentrates oaked Chardonnay, forcing the oak and alcohol to the foreground, the 0449/97 takes the opposite approach: a generous 620ml bowl and a wide 108mm open rim that give the wine room to breathe, the aromatics room to unfold, and the drinker the experience of finesse rather than weight.

The large bowl volume allows the multi-layered aromas of serious oaked Chardonnay to develop fully before reaching the nose. The wide open rim then diffuses the bouquet gently on delivery, preventing rich styles from becoming over-concentrated and integrating richness with acidity across a broader section of the palate. The result is a glass that presents oaked Chardonnay, white Burgundy, and barrel-fermented whites at their most balanced and complete. Recommended wines include Corton-Charlemagne, Meursault, Montrachet, Pouilly-Fuisse, oaked Morillon, and dry Riesling Spatlese. Fine-blown from lead-free crystal, Restaurant Veritas achieves the refined feel of handmade stemware with machine-made precision, certified for 1,500 commercial dishwasher cycles under EN 12875-1/2.

Key features of the Riedel Restaurant Veritas Oaked Chardonnay glass:

  • Generous 620ml bowl: Provides the volume for multi-layered aromatics to develop fully before reaching the nose, revealing the complexity and depth that distinguishes serious oaked Chardonnay from lighter white wine styles
  • Wide 108mm open rim: Allows the rich bouquet to diffuse gently, emphasising finesse and preventing fuller styles from becoming heavy or over-concentrated on the nose and palate
  • Broad palate delivery: The open aperture delivers wine across a wide section of the palate, integrating richness and acidity harmoniously and making the wine feel more balanced than a narrow rim would allow
  • White Burgundy grands crus ready: Specifically recommended for Corton-Charlemagne, Meursault, Montrachet, and Pouilly-Fuisse, where the bowl volume allows the layered complexity of aged white Burgundy to fully express itself
  • Versatile across full-bodied whites: Works equally well for oaked Morillon, barrel-fermented whites, and dry Riesling Spatlese, making it a practical single glass for serious white wine programmes
  • Fine-blown lead-free crystal: Achieves the delicate appearance and light feel of handmade stemware with machine-made precision and commercial consistency
  • 1,500-cycle commercial certification: EN 12875-1/2 certified for 1,500 dishwasher cycles, 50% more durable than the standard Restaurant range, corresponding to 10+ years of typical restaurant service life
  • Trade-only set of 6: Exclusively available to hospitality operations including bars, restaurants, hotels, and catering businesses

This glass is the natural choice for restaurants, hotels, and wine bars with serious Chardonnay or white Burgundy programmes, and for any operation where full-bodied, complex white wines feature prominently on the list. The Veritas collection is available exclusively to trade customers.

What Hospitality Professionals Ask About This Glass

Why does oaked Chardonnay need a specific glass at all?

Most white wine glasses are designed for freshness and aromatic precision, which suits lighter, more linear styles. Oaked Chardonnay is a different wine in structural terms: it has body, fat texture, oak-derived vanilla and spice, lees-derived creaminess, and often considerable alcohol alongside its fruit. In a smaller or narrower glass, those elements compress together and the oak and alcohol dominate. The 0449/97's large bowl and wide open rim separate those layers and let them develop individually, which is what transforms a glass of white Burgundy from impressive to genuinely memorable.

Is this the right glass for village-level white Burgundy as well as grands crus?

Yes. The 0449/97 is suited to any white Burgundy with genuine aromatic complexity and body, from village Meursault upward. Entry-level Macon or Chablis without oak influence may be slightly over-glassed in a bowl this size, but for any Burgundy where barrel fermentation or ageing is part of the production, the extra volume rewards the wine rather than overwhelms it. If your list spans the full range from Chablis to Montrachet, the 0449/97 is the appropriate glass for the oaked and more complex end of that spectrum.

Why is dry Riesling Spatlese recommended for a glass designed around oak?

Dry Riesling Spatlese from Germany or Alsace is a high-intensity white wine with considerable body, concentration, and aromatic complexity, even without oak. The petrol, stone fruit, and mineral character of a mature dry Spatlese can be overwhelming in a small glass. The generous bowl of the 0449/97 gives those aromatics room to diffuse and layer, and the wide rim prevents the wine's inherent intensity from dominating on delivery. The glass is designed for full-bodied, complex white wines in general; oak is one route to that intensity, but not the only one.

Does the large bowl cause the wine to warm up too quickly?

The bowl is not intended to be filled more than roughly a third (125-175ml). At that pour level, the wine is not sitting exposed across a vast surface. Oaked Chardonnay and white Burgundy also serve slightly warmer than everyday whites, around 12-14°C, so a gradual temperature rise during the course of drinking is appropriate rather than a problem. Serving the wine slightly cool from a temperature-controlled cellar and using standard pour sizes keeps the experience correct.

How many dishwasher cycles are these glasses certified for?

Riedel Restaurant Veritas glasses are independently certified to EN 12875-1/2 standards for 1,500 commercial dishwasher cycles with no visible deterioration. This is 50% greater durability than the standard Restaurant range, and in normal restaurant usage corresponds to 10+ years of service life.

The Case for Serious Glassware on the White Wine List

There is a persistent assumption in hospitality that white wine glassware requires less thought than red. A standard medium bowl, the assumption goes, will do for everything from house Pinot Grigio to aged white Burgundy. The Riedel Veritas Oaked Chardonnay glass exists to challenge that assumption directly.

White Burgundy grands crus are among the most expensive wines on the planet. A bottle of Montrachet or Corton-Charlemagne at the table represents a significant revenue opportunity and a significant moment of trust from the customer. Presenting that wine in a generic white wine glass is a missed opportunity: the wine will still be good, but it will not be as good as it could be. The generous bowl and open rim of the 0449/97 transform the experience by giving the wine the space its complexity demands, which is precisely what a customer paying a premium price expects, even if they cannot articulate why.

The same logic applies further down the list. Operations with strong New World Chardonnay programmes, whether California, Margaret River, or Burgundy-inspired styles from elsewhere, are serving wines designed around oak integration, lees character, and textural richness. A small, narrow glass forces those elements to compete rather than harmonise. The 0449/97 creates harmony by design.

Beyond Chardonnay and Burgundy, the glass works well for any full-bodied, aromatic white: barrel-fermented Semillon, white Rhone blends with bottle age, oaked white Rioja, and structured Viognier all benefit from the same treatment. For operations that want a single, serious white wine glass capable of serving the full breadth of their premium white list, the 0449/97 is a logical and commercially sound choice.

Care & Use Instructions

Commercial Dishwasher Use: Veritas glasses are certified for 1,500 commercial dishwasher cycles under EN 12875-1/2. The 108mm diameter fits standard commercial dishwasher racks comfortably. Use standard commercial cycles with professional-grade detergent. Remove promptly after the cycle and allow to air dry to prevent water spotting.

Serving Temperature: Oaked Chardonnay and white Burgundy serve best at 12-14°C, warmer than everyday whites. Avoid over-chilling: below 10°C the aromatics close and the oak becomes angular. A standard refrigerator or white wine cooler set to 10-12°C and allowed to come up to temperature for 10-15 minutes before service is correct.

Pour Size: Pour 125-175ml, filling the bowl roughly one quarter to one third. The 620ml capacity is designed to leave generous headspace for aromatics to develop. A standard 125ml service pour fills the bowl to approximately 20%, which is correct for this glass.

Handling: Fine-blown crystal is lighter and more refined than standard commercial stemware. Hold by the stem or base. The construction is certified for commercial use but benefits from careful handling during racking, polishing, and service.

Storage: Store upright with adequate height clearance for 217mm. Never stack or store rim-down. The wide open 108mm rim makes these glasses unsuitable for stacking and they should be racked individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses typically takes 3-5 working days. For hospitality operations requiring urgent delivery, contact us to discuss expedited shipping options.

Can I return glasses if they don't suit our operation?

We offer a no quibble return guarantee on unopened sets in original packaging. We recommend ordering one set to trial with your wine programme before committing to larger quantities.

Should we use this glass for unoaked Chardonnay too?

The 0449/97 is designed for full-bodied, complex whites where the generous bowl volume is an asset. Unoaked Chardonnay, particularly lighter styles such as Chablis or basic Macon, is better suited to a smaller, more focused bowl that preserves freshness and directs the cleaner, more linear aromatics efficiently. If your list spans both styles, consider using this glass for your oaked and barrel-fermented whites and a smaller varietal-specific Chardonnay glass for unoaked styles.

Can home users purchase Restaurant Veritas glasses?

No. The Restaurant Veritas collection is trade-only, available exclusively to bars, restaurants, hotels, and catering operations. Home users seeking the same varietal-specific shape should consider the consumer Riedel Veritas range, available without trade restrictions.

Do you offer volume discounts for larger groups?

For hospitality groups requiring multiple sets, typically 10 or more for venue refits or multi-site operations, contact us to discuss volume pricing and delivery arrangements.

What is the expected annual breakage rate?

Breakage rates typically run 10-13% annually with properly trained staff. The wide 108mm rim requires care during racking and service, but the fine-blown construction is certified for commercial use. Proper staff training around handling and racking is the most effective tool for managing breakage with any fine crystal.

Can this glass be used for other full-bodied white wines beyond Chardonnay?

Yes. The 0449/97 works well for any full-bodied, aromatic white wine with genuine complexity: barrel-fermented Semillon, oaked white Rioja, white Rhone blends with bottle age (Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier), and serious barrel-fermented whites from any region. The guiding principle is body and aromatic complexity. If the wine has the structure to fill a generous bowl, this glass rewards it.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed - including the USA, Australia, and other destinations - this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222682 with the details of your order and we will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours, then ask whether you would like to proceed.

Please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Returns & Refunds

We hope your order arrives in perfect condition and that you love what you've chosen. If something isn't right - whether the item is unwanted, damaged, or develops a fault - we'll do our best to make the process as straightforward as possible.

You can reach us via our contact form or by calling 01737 222682. You'll be speaking to a member of our team based in our Surrey warehouse.

I want to return an unwanted item

Unwanted items can be returned for a no-quibble refund, provided they are in resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Our returns policy normally covers the 365 days following purchase - but if you're outside that window, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

Packing your return:

  • Wrap or box items appropriately to prevent damage in transit.
  • Do not stick labels or tape directly to the product's branded packaging - a damaged box means we can no longer accept the return.
  • The easiest method is to reuse the outer packing material and box we originally sent your order in.

If the product is not in fully resaleable condition, or the branded box is damaged, we will apply our half-price replacement guarantee and refund you half the original purchase price.

Return postage: Customers are responsible for the cost of returning items. We recommend using a recorded or signed-for service so the parcel is insured and trackable.

Items remain your responsibility until they arrive with us.
