Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux Glass

The Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux glass brings together precision engineering and practical durability for everyday wine appreciation. This glass represents an evolution of Spiegelau's Willsberger (1982) and Hybrid (2011) collections, incorporating proprietary technology to create exceptionally thin machine-made glasses that balance elegance with genuine dishwasher resilience.

Spiegelau developed new manufacturing processes specifically for the Definition collection, producing glasses with bowl geometry and balance previously achievable only through handcrafting. The 750ml capacity provides generous aeration for complex red wines, whilst the balanced design ensures comfortable handling despite the ultra-light construction. Made in Germany with lead-free crystal glass, Definition glasses showcase wine's aromas and flavours with remarkable clarity.

Key features of the Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux glass:

  • Ultra-light construction: Machine-blown with precision technology that creates consistently thin walls and balanced weight distribution
  • Genuine dishwasher durability: Unlike many fine glasses that are merely "dishwasher-safe", Definition glasses withstand regular machine washing without clouding or damage
  • Bordeaux-specific geometry: 750ml bowl designed for medium to full-bodied red wines with high tannin content, emphasising fruit character whilst softening harsh edges
  • German engineering: Made in Germany with Spiegelau's established reputation for combining quality with practical functionality
  • Modern design lineage: Evolution of proven Willsberger and Hybrid designs, refined through decades of feedback and innovation

This glass suits wine enthusiasts who want varietal-specific performance without the anxiety of handling ultra-delicate crystal. The Definition collection delivers professional-level wine presentation for regular use, making it ideal for those who value both quality and practicality.

What Customers Ask About Spiegelau Definition Bordeaux Glass

Which wines work best in this glass?

Spiegelau designed this glass for medium to full-bodied red wines with high tannin content, particularly Bordeaux blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The generous 750ml capacity allows the bouquet to develop fully, whilst the bowl shape directs wine to areas of your palate that emphasise fruit character and smooth out rough tannin edges. If you primarily drink lighter reds like Pinot Noir, consider a Burgundy-specific glass instead.

Is this really dishwasher-safe for regular use?

Yes, the Definition collection is specifically engineered for dishwasher durability. Unlike many fine glasses where "dishwasher-safe" comes with caveats, Definition glasses withstand regular machine washing cycles without clouding, chipping, or losing clarity. This makes them practical for everyday use rather than special occasions only. For longest life, use a gentle cycle and avoid overcrowding the dishwasher rack.

How does Definition compare to Riedel collections?

Spiegelau is owned by Riedel and follows similar varietal-specific design principles. Definition sits between Riedel's Performance and Veritas collections in terms of refinement, offering thinner walls than Performance but with greater dishwasher durability than Veritas. The key advantage is genuine everyday practicality - Definition glasses are designed to withstand regular machine washing, making them ideal for those who want quality without handling anxiety.

Is this sold as a single glass or a pair?

The Definition Bordeaux glass is sold as a set of 2 glasses (pair) as well as a 4-pack for those building a larger collection. Check the product variants for available pack options.

What does "machine tolerances possible" mean?

As machine-made glassware, Definition glasses may have minimal variations in exact measurements - typically less than 1-2mm in height or capacity. These tiny tolerances don't affect wine presentation or glass performance, but Spiegelau notes them transparently. The bowl geometry and rim diameter remain consistent between glasses, which is what matters for wine tasting.

Understanding Spiegelau 's Definition Innovation

The Definition collection represents Spiegelau's response to a common frustration amongst wine enthusiasts: the choice between delicate glasses that enhance wine presentation but require anxious handling, and durable everyday glasses that compromise on refinement. Spiegelau's parent company Riedel faced this same challenge when developing technology for their Superleggero collection, and those innovations informed Definition's engineering.

The breakthrough lies in proprietary manufacturing equipment that produces consistently thin walls and precise bowl geometry whilst maintaining structural integrity for dishwasher use. This combination was previously impossible - truly thin glasses either couldn't survive machine washing or required excessive care to avoid clouding and damage. The 2021 design builds on nearly four decades of refinement, starting with the influential Willsberger collection in 1982.

For regular wine drinkers who previously chose durability over performance, Definition changes the equation. You can genuinely use these glasses daily, load them in the dishwasher without worry, and still experience how varietal-specific bowl shapes affect wine presentation. This practical approach to quality reflects Spiegelau's focus on accessible excellence rather than precious rarity.

Care & Use Instructions

Dishwasher Care: The Definition collection is engineered for dishwasher durability. Use a standard or gentle cycle at maximum 55°C with mild detergent. Space glasses so they don't touch each other or other items in the rack. Avoid lemon-scented or highly abrasive detergents which can affect clarity over time. Remove glasses promptly when the cycle finishes and allow to air dry with the door open to prevent water spots. This is genuine dishwasher-safe glassware, not just technically compatible - regular machine washing is expected rather than discouraged.

Handwashing: If you prefer to handwash, use warm (not hot) water with a small amount of mild detergent. Hold the glass by the base, never twist the bowl whilst holding the stem. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry immediately with a lint-free microfibre cloth or allow to air dry upright.

Polishing: For best clarity, polish glasses with a microfibre or linen cloth whilst holding the base firmly. If water spots appear, add a small amount of white vinegar to your final rinse water.

Storage: Store glasses upright in a cupboard or on a shelf where they won't be knocked. Never stack glasses or store them rim-down, as this can cause chipping and prevents air circulation.

Handling: Whilst durable for everyday use, these are still precision glasses with thin walls. Handle with reasonable care, particularly when loading and unloading the dishwasher. The balanced design makes them comfortable to hold and less prone to tipping than their light weight might suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses typically takes 3-5 working days. Next day delivery may be available on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. We pack all glassware carefully with protective packaging to ensure safe arrival.

Can I return the glasses if I don't like them after using them?

We offer a no quibble return guarantee that allows you to return goods even after use. The items must be in a resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Please wrap or box items appropriately for transit to avoid damage to goods or boxes.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

If you accidentally break a glass within 2 years of purchase, we'll replace it at half the current retail price. You'll need proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement, or order confirmation if purchased online) and evidence of the breakage (a photo is fine). We log your purchase at point of sale, or online orders are automatically recorded in our system.

Can I buy just one glass or do I need to buy a pair?

The Definition Bordeaux glass is sold as a set of 2 glasses (pair) or as a set of 4 glasses (4-pack). Check the product variants to select your preferred pack quantity. The 4-pack typically offers better value per glass if you're building a full set.

Are Spiegelau glasses marked with the brand name?

Authentic Spiegelau glasses typically feature the brand mark etched into the base or stem. The Definition collection carries this marking, confirming authenticity. All glasses purchased from The Riedel Shop are genuine Spiegelau products sourced directly from the manufacturer.

Will dishwasher use eventually cloud the glasses?

The Definition collection is specifically engineered to maintain clarity through regular dishwasher cycles. Unlike many fine glasses that gradually cloud with machine washing, Definition glasses resist this common problem. For best long-term results, use quality dishwasher detergent, avoid overcrowding the rack, and remove glasses promptly when the cycle finishes. Many customers report years of regular dishwasher use with no clarity loss.

What's the relationship between Spiegelau and Riedel?

Spiegelau is owned by Riedel and operates as part of the same company. Both brands share the same varietal-specific design philosophy - the concept that glass shape affects wine presentation - but target slightly different markets. Spiegelau typically emphasises practical durability and accessible pricing, whilst Riedel offers both everyday and ultra-premium collections. The Definition collection brings Riedel's technical innovations to Spiegelau's focus on everyday usability.

Deliveries currently suspended

Due to ongoing issues, we have had to suspend deliveries to mainland Europe and the Republic of Ireland. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed - including the USA, Australia, and other destinations - this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222682 with the details of your order and we will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours, then ask whether you would like to proceed.

Please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.

Returns & Refunds

We hope your order arrives in perfect condition and that you love what you've chosen. If something isn't right - whether the item is unwanted, damaged, or develops a fault - we'll do our best to make the process as straightforward as possible.

You can reach us via our contact form or by calling 01737 222682. You'll be speaking to a member of our team based in our Surrey warehouse.

I want to return an unwanted item

Unwanted items can be returned for a no-quibble refund, provided they are in resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Our returns policy normally covers the 365 days following purchase - but if you're outside that window, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

Packing your return:

  • Wrap or box items appropriately to prevent damage in transit.
  • Do not stick labels or tape directly to the product's branded packaging - a damaged box means we can no longer accept the return.
  • The easiest method is to reuse the outer packing material and box we originally sent your order in.

If the product is not in fully resaleable condition, or the branded box is damaged, we will apply our half-price replacement guarantee and refund you half the original purchase price.

Return postage: Customers are responsible for the cost of returning items. We recommend using a recorded or signed-for service so the parcel is insured and trackable.

Items remain your responsibility until they arrive with us.

Alternatively, you can purchase a Royal Mail returns label here, from our parent company, Art of Living Cookshop.
