Riedel Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo Glass

The Riedel Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass is built to showcase the subtle character of thinner-skinned red grapes. Shaped specifically to enhance the delicate fruit notes and complex aromas that make Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo wines special, this glass captures ethereal aromatics whilst directing wine to areas of your palate that soften acidity perception. Available as a pair or 4-pack, these glasses combine elegant design with practical dishwasher-safe convenience.

Inspired by Riedel's Extreme collection, Veloce (Italian for "fast") features taller stems for better balance, finer bowls that respond better to temperature changes, thinner walls for a more elegant feel, and a wider 100mm base for stability. Created using advanced machine technology that produces results indistinguishable from handcrafted glass, Veloce delivers premium design at accessible price points without compromising performance. Each glass features the grape variety printed on the base, making it easy to select the right glass for your wine.

Key features of the Riedel Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass:

  • Varietal-specific design: Bowl shape specifically crafted to capture the ethereal aromas of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo whilst softening acidity perception
  • Enhanced aromatics: Captures delicate fruit notes and complex aromas characteristic of thinner-skinned red grapes
  • Extreme-inspired proportions: Taller stems, finer bowls, and refined profile based on Riedel's premium Extreme collection
  • Temperature-responsive bowls: Finer bowl construction responds better to wine temperature, maintaining optimal serving conditions
  • Substantial stability: 100mm base diameter provides excellent balance despite elegant proportions
  • Convenient identification: Grape variety printed on base makes glass selection effortless
  • Machine precision: Advanced technology creates handmade appearance with consistent quality
  • Dishwasher safe: Practical for regular use without hand-washing requirements
  • Flexible pack sizes: Available as a pair or 4-pack to suit different entertaining needs

These glasses work beautifully with Pinot Noir from Burgundy or New World regions, Nebbiolo-based wines like Barolo and Barbaresco, and other delicate red wines where aromatics and fruit elegance define the experience. As Brian notes in his review, the Veloce creates "a beautiful marriage with a lovely bottle of Barolo" - capturing the essence of what makes these wines special.

What Customers Ask About Riedel Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo Glass

Which wines work best in this glass?

Riedel designed this glass specifically for Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo - wines from thinner-skinned red grapes that showcase delicate aromatics and fruit elegance. This includes red Burgundy, Barolo, Barbaresco, New World Pinot Noir, and similar delicate reds. The bowl shape captures ethereal aromas whilst directing wine to areas of your palate that soften acidity perception, enhancing the wine's fruit character. If you primarily drink fuller-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah, consider a glass designed for those varietals instead, as bowl shape significantly affects wine perception.

Which pack size should I choose?

Choose the pair (£49.95) if you're a couple or building a varied glassware collection with different varietal-specific shapes. The 4-pack (£93.75) works well for small dinner parties or families who regularly enjoy Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. The 4-pack offers better value per glass whilst ensuring you have enough for entertaining. Consider your drinking habits, storage space, and how often you serve wines suited to this glass shape when deciding.

What's the benefit of having the grape variety printed on the base?

The printed grape variety on the base makes glass selection effortless when you own multiple varietal-specific glasses. Instead of trying to remember which shape suits which wine, you can simply turn the glass over and confirm. This practical feature is particularly helpful when building a collection or when multiple people in your household use the glassware. It also adds to the educational aspect of varietal-specific glassware, reinforcing the connection between glass shape and wine type.

How does Veloce compare to other Riedel collections for Pinot Noir?

Veloce sits between Vinum and the ultra-thin Veritas or Superleggero collections. It's more refined than Vinum with taller stems and finer bowls inspired by the Extreme collection, but more practical and robust than Veritas or Superleggero. The machine production with advanced technology delivers consistent quality at accessible pricing. For Pinot Noir specifically, all three collections work well - choose Veloce if you want elegant design with dishwasher-safe convenience, Vinum if you prioritise value and durability, or Veritas/Superleggero if you want the finest possible glassware and are willing to handwash.

Why does glass shape matter for delicate wines?

Delicate wines like Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo rely on aromatic complexity and fruit elegance rather than bold tannin structure. The bowl shape determines how aromatics collect and release, and how wine flows to different areas of your palate. A glass designed for Pinot Noir captures ethereal aromatics that might dissipate in a wide Bordeaux glass, whilst directing wine to emphasise fruit character rather than tannin or alcohol. For wines where subtlety and complexity are key characteristics, the right glass shape makes a noticeable difference in what you perceive.

What Customers Tell Us

Brian captures the essence of the Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass perfectly in his review: "a beautiful marriage with a lovely bottle of Barolo. Bellissimo!" This reflects the glass's purpose - creating harmony between vessel and wine where each enhances the other. For wines like Barolo and Burgundy where you've invested in quality and complexity, the right glass reveals what makes these wines special.

The Veloce collection appeals to wine enthusiasts who appreciate varietal-specific glassware but want practical, dishwasher-safe convenience. The printed grape variety on the base makes glass selection straightforward when building a collection, whilst the Extreme-inspired design delivers visual elegance. Customers value the balance between refined aesthetics and everyday practicality that Veloce provides.

Understanding Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo

Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo represent opposite ends of Italy and France but share crucial characteristics that demand similar glass design. Both come from thinner-skinned grapes that produce wines prized for aromatic complexity, delicate fruit characteristics, and elegant structure rather than bold power. Pinot Noir from Burgundy offers red fruit notes, earthy complexity, and silky texture. Nebbiolo from Piedmont delivers floral aromatics, tar and rose characteristics, and structured tannins that soften with age.

These wines require glasses that capture and concentrate aromatics without overwhelming them. The Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass provides the right bowl volume and shape to collect ethereal aromas - allowing you to appreciate the subtle complexities that define these wines. The rim diameter and bowl curvature direct wine to areas of your palate that emphasise fruit elegance whilst softening acidity perception, creating balance in wines that can taste sharp or austere in inappropriate glassware.

When you invest in quality Burgundy or Barolo, you're paying for subtlety and complexity. The right glass ensures you actually perceive what you've purchased, rather than missing the nuances that make these wines special and expensive.

Care & Use Instructions

Dishwasher Care: Veloce glasses are dishwasher safe. Use a gentle cycle at maximum 55°C and space glasses so they don't touch each other or other items. The tall stem requires careful placement in the dishwasher - secure glasses in the upper rack where they won't knock against other items. Avoid heavily abrasive or lemon-scented detergents which can cloud crystal over time. Remove promptly and allow to air dry with the door open to prevent water spots.

Handwashing: Use warm (not hot) water with mild detergent. Hold glasses by the base, never twist the bowl whilst holding the stem. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a lint-free cloth. The finer bowls and thin walls require gentle handling, though these glasses are more durable than their elegant appearance suggests.

Polishing: Use a microfibre or linen cloth. Hold the base firmly and polish the bowl in circular motions. For the tall stem, support it gently whilst polishing to avoid stress. For stubborn water spots, add a small amount of white vinegar to rinse water.

Storage: Store glasses upright, never stacked or rim-down. The tall stems require adequate vertical space in cupboards. This prevents chipping and allows air circulation to prevent musty odours. The 100mm base provides stability during storage, but ensure glasses are placed securely.

Serving Temperature: Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo show best at 14-16°C - slightly cooler than room temperature. The fine, temperature-responsive bowls help maintain optimal serving temperature, though you may want to chill the wine slightly before serving if your room is warm. Avoid extreme temperature changes which can stress the glass.

Pouring: Fill to about one-third capacity to allow room for swirling and aroma development. The generous bowl volume means you don't need to fill the glass to enjoy wine properly - giving the wine space to breathe enhances the aromatics that make Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo special.

Identifying Your Glass: The grape variety printed on the base makes identification easy. When building a varietal-specific collection, this feature helps you select the right glass quickly without memorising bowl shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses typically takes 3-5 working days and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. We pack all glassware carefully with protective packaging to ensure safe arrival.

Can I return the glasses if I don't like them after using them?

We offer a no quibble return guarantee that allows you to return goods even after use. The items must be in a resaleable condition and in their original packaging. Please wrap or box items appropriately for transit to avoid damage.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

If you accidentally break a glass within 2 years of purchase, we'll replace it at half the current retail price. You'll need proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement, or order confirmation if purchased online) and evidence of the breakage (a photo is fine). We log your purchase at point of sale, or online orders are automatically recorded in our system.

Are Riedel glasses marked with the brand name?

Authentic Riedel glasses typically feature subtle branding etched into the base. The Veloce collection carries the Riedel mark plus the grape variety printed on the base (Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo for this glass), confirming authenticity and making glass selection easy. All glasses purchased from The Riedel Shop are genuine Riedel products sourced directly from the manufacturer.

Do you offer gift packaging?

Riedel Veloce glasses come in Riedel's standard packaging, which is suitable for gifting and provides appropriate protection for the crystal. These make excellent gifts for Pinot Noir and Barolo enthusiasts.

Can I buy additional glasses to match my existing Veloce set?

Yes, the Veloce collection is part of Riedel's ongoing range, making it easy to add to your collection or replace individual glasses. Machine production with advanced technology ensures new glasses will match your existing set in both size and quality. You can purchase either pack size to expand your collection.

What's the difference between the pair and 4-pack pricing?

The pair is priced at £49.95 (originally £62.50, saving 20%), whilst the 4-pack is £93.75. The 4-pack offers better value per glass - approximately £23.44 per glass versus £24.98 per glass in the pair. If you regularly enjoy Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo and entertain occasionally, the 4-pack provides cost savings whilst ensuring you have enough glasses for guests.

Will this glass work for other red wines?

The Veloce Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass is specifically designed for delicate red wines from thinner-skinned grapes. It works excellently with Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Gamay, and similar elegant reds. For fuller-bodied wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah, you'll achieve better results with glasses designed for those varietals - the bowl shape and rim diameter significantly affect how you perceive wine characteristics. Consider building a collection with different varietal-specific shapes for optimal wine enjoyment.

How do I know if varietal-specific glasses are worth it?

If you regularly drink wines where you've invested in quality - premium Burgundy, aged Barolo, or comparable wines - varietal-specific glasses reveal the subtleties and complexities you've paid for. The difference is most noticeable with delicate wines like Pinot Noir where aromatics and fruit elegance are key characteristics. For everyday wines under £15-20 per bottle, standard glasses work well. For wines where you're investing in nuance and complexity, the right glass shape makes an appreciable difference in what you perceive.

Why does the printed grape variety matter?

When building a varietal-specific glassware collection, the printed identification on the base eliminates guesswork. Instead of trying to remember which bowl shape suits which wine, you can simply check the base. This practical feature is particularly helpful when multiple people in your household use the glassware, when you're setting the table for guests, or when you're learning about varietal-specific glasses. It reinforces the educational aspect of understanding how glass shape affects wine perception.

Building a Varietal-Specific Collection

The Veloce collection's approach to varietal-specific glassware - with grape varieties printed on the base - makes building a comprehensive collection more accessible. Rather than requiring extensive knowledge to identify which glass suits which wine, the printed identification provides immediate clarity. This educational element helps wine enthusiasts understand and appreciate how bowl shape affects wine perception.

Starting with a Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo glass makes sense for many wine enthusiasts, as these delicate wines particularly benefit from appropriate glassware. The ethereal aromatics and subtle fruit characteristics that define Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo can disappear in glasses designed for bolder wines. Once you experience how the right glass reveals complexity in delicate wines, you may find yourself exploring other varietal-specific shapes for your favourite wine styles.

The Veloce collection's dishwasher-safe convenience and accessible pricing make it practical to own multiple varietal-specific glasses without excessive investment or maintenance burden. You can build your collection gradually, adding shapes as you discover new wine preferences, whilst the machine production ensures consistent quality and availability for replacement or expansion.
