Champagne Wine Glasses

The Riedel Restaurant Champagne Wine Glass (0446/58) makes the same argument about Champagne that a large Burgundy bowl makes about Pinot Noir: that the wine's complexity deserves a glass with room to reveal it. At 440ml with an egg-shaped bowl and an 85mm rim, the 0446/58 is designed for Champagne where the aromatic character is the reason the bottle is on the table. Vintage Champagne. Prestige cuvee. Aged Blanc de Blancs.

The egg-shaped bowl provides the surface area and headspace for layered aromatic complexity to unfold and intensify within the glass before reaching the nose. The 85mm rim releases aromatics broadly across the palate on entry. A sparkling point at the base provides consistent bubble formation throughout the drink. Machine-made in lead-free crystal, certified for 1,500 commercial dishwasher cycles, sold in sets of 12.

Key features:

  • Egg-shaped bowl for full aromatic revelation: The bowl provides surface area and internal volume for Champagne's layered aromatic character — brioche, stone fruit, citrus, mineral — to develop fully and reach the nose with complexity intact
  • 85mm rim for broad aromatic release: The wide rim delivers the wine across the full palate on entry, allowing all aromatic layers to register simultaneously rather than through a narrow channel
  • Sparkling point for consistent effervescence: Etched nucleation point provides a consistent site for CO2 release, producing a steady fine bubble stream throughout the drink
  • 440ml generous aromatic headspace: A standard 125ml pour sits in the lower portion of the bowl and leaves substantial aromatic headspace — the configuration the glass is designed to exploit
  • Best for: vintage, prestige cuvee, complex non-vintage, aged Blanc de Blancs
  • 1,500-cycle dishwasher certification: EN 12875-1/2 certified
  • Set of 12, trade-only: Restaurant-format case quantity

What Restaurant Professionals Ask About This Product

How does this glass compare to the 0446/48 Champagne Glass?

The 0446/48 (260ml, 66mm, slightly curved bowl) is designed for fresh, effervescence-forward Champagne where fruitiness and bubble display are central. The 0446/58 (440ml, 85mm, egg-shaped bowl) is designed for complex Champagne where aromatic revelation is the primary objective. For most by-the-glass service, the 0446/48 is appropriate. For prestige and vintage bottles, the 0446/58 is the correct choice. Operations with a serious Champagne list will want both.

The glass looks very large for Champagne. Is the 125ml pour correct?

Yes, and this is worth understanding before the glass arrives at the table. A 125ml pour in the 440ml 0446/58 fills the glass to approximately 28% of capacity. It looks under-filled to the uninitiated. This is intentional: the aromatic headspace above the liquid is where the wine's complexity develops before reaching the nose. Filling the glass higher would reduce that headspace and diminish the performance the bowl is designed to deliver.

Does the wider bowl mean the Champagne goes flat faster?

Yes, to a degree, and this is the deliberate trade-off the 0446/58 makes. A wider bowl allows CO2 to escape more readily. The sparkling point provides consistent bubble formation throughout, but the effervescence is less visually prominent than in a narrower glass. This is the right trade-off for aged vintage Champagne or prestige cuvee where the aromatic complexity is the reason the bottle is on the table.

How many dishwasher cycles will this glass survive?

EN 12875-1/2 certified for 1,500 commercial dishwasher cycles, corresponding to 10+ years of normal restaurant service life.

Champagne as a Wine: The Case for the Aromatic Bowl

The traditional flute was designed for a version of Champagne that was younger, lighter, and primarily valued for its effervescence and refreshment. That Champagne still exists and still deserves a glass that shows its best qualities. But serious Champagne, the vintage wines, the prestige cuvees, the Blanc de Blancs from grand cru vineyards, is a different kind of wine altogether.

A flute is not the right tool for this wine. The narrow channel restricts aromatic development and delivers the complexity to the nose in a compressed form that loses the integration of the whole. The 0446/58 is the right tool: an egg-shaped bowl that gives the wine's aromatics space to gather and intensify, and an 85mm rim that releases them across the palate with the breadth the wine's complexity deserves.

For a fine dining operation with a serious Champagne list, the two-glass conversation between the 0446/48 and the 0446/58 maps onto the Champagne list itself: the 0446/48 for the considered house selection, the 0446/58 for the bottles that deserve the full treatment.

Care & Use Instructions

Dishwasher Use: EN 12875-1/2 certified for 1,500 cycles. Use stemmed glass racks with individual compartment support. The 221mm height requires adequate rack clearance. Remove promptly and allow to air dry. In hard-water areas, maintain rinse-aid and descaling regimes to protect the sparkling point. Annual breakage rates typically run 15-20%.

Polishing: Steam-polish with a lint-free cloth before formal service. Hold by the stem and avoid touching the bowl interior; finger oils impair the sparkling point and create irregular bubble formation.

Breakage Planning: 15-20% annually in active restaurant service.

If your desired country is not listed (USA, Australia etc.) this is most likely because couriers charge by "Volumetric Weight" i.e. a combination of how large and how heavy the package is.

Just give us a call on 01737 222682 with the details of your order - we will advise the shipping costs within 24 hours  and ask if you want to proceed.

Please note that any overseas shipment is at your own risk and you will hence need to take out insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages list the value of the contents as well as a description of the items. Any customs or import duties levied once the package reaches your country must be borne by you. Your local customs office will be able to provide you with further information.

The Riedel Shop Returns and Refunds

Although we hope your order arrives in perfect condition and you love your items, we realise that sometimes things go wrong (or you change your mind). Our quick and simple returns policy is outlined below, and we will do our best to help make the process as easy as possible.

Please also remember that you can contact us via our contact form or phone - where you will be speaking to a member of our team based in our Surrey warehouse.

I want to return an unwanted item.

If an item is unwanted, it can be returned to us for a no-quibble refund. The item(s) must be in a resaleable condition, and in their original packaging.

Please wrap or box items appropriately for transit to avoid damage to goods or boxes.

Please do not stick labels or tape directly to the products packaging (e.g. branded box) as if it is damaged in any way, we can no longer accept the return.

The best way to pack items is by re-using the outer packing material (bubble wrap) and box that we used when sending your package originally.

If the product returned is not in fully resalable condition, or the branded box is damaged, we will apply our half-price replacement guarantee and credit you or refund you for half the original price of the item.

Customers are responsible for the cost of returning item(s), and we suggest using a recorded or signed for delivery service so the parcel is insured and can be tracked.

Goods are the customer’s responsibility until they arrive at our address.
